Summary of this Issue
Last
Sunday (June 14th) we celebrated Corpus Christi … The Solemnity of the Most
Holy Body and Blood of Christ. This is the greatest gift
Christ left us … His Real Presence in the Eucharist. Such an awesome
gift deserves its own feast. And that’s why, back in the
days of Thomas Aquinas and St. Francis of Assisi, the Pope decided to institute the Feast of
Corpus Christi.
On
June 7th, we celebrated the Feast of the Most Blessed
Trinity. Jehovah Witnesses attack it and The Da Vinci Code
sought to undermine the Doctrine of the Trinity. But
what exactly does The Trinity mean? Fr. Lindsay Harrison
has provided us with a reasoned explanation of this fundamental
Doctrine of our faith.
June
is dedicated to the Sacred Heart of Jesus. June 19th,
marks the Feast of the Sacred Heart as well as the beginning of
the Year for Priests. Jeff Mirus from Catholicculture.org
gathered several pertinent articles and references on these topics.
Men’s
Breakfast Talks. Earlier this month we had two great Men’s Breakfast
Talks. On June 6th, Jim Hughes, President of
Campaign Life Coalition was the speaker at Annunciation of the
Lord Parish. On June 13th, Matt Farnand, CCO
Team Leader at Carleton University gave the breakfast
talk at St. Augustine Parish. Voice files to both talks are provided
for either listening or download.
Angels
& Demons, Dan Brown’s latest initiative has stirred a lot of interest.
References are provided which utterly debunk this book and movie.
These could provide a teaching opportunity to pass on some true
Church history.

June 14th: The Solemnity
of the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ

The Feast of Corpus Christi
If
there is any one Catholic doctrine that people have choked on
over the centuries, it has to be transubstantiation – the teaching
that, during the Mass, bread and wine become the body and blood
of Jesus Christ.
The
problems started during Jesus’ public ministry, as this Sunday’s
gospel shows. Why
then, would the Church institute a special feast to highlight
this challenging dogma? To find out, visit the following
link:
http://www.crossroadsinitiative.com/pics/Real_Presence_of_Christ.pdf
Focus on the Real Presence
"When I say that we should receive each Holy
Communion as if it were our first, our last and our only Holy
Communion, it is for no other reason than to renew our devotion
and love for the Blessed Sacrament. If we approach the sacrament
in this manner, it will not become commonplace or routine, and
we will be prepared to receive the Lord with a reverent and humble
disposition

Feast of the Most
Holy Trinity

June 7th we celebrated the Feast of the Most Holy Trinity. The revelation of the oneness of God and “threeness”
of Persons is the most central dogma of our faith. Christians
have always found it difficult to comprehend but today there is
an added dimension to this problem. In our multicultural
society many Christians find themselves having to try to explain
this belief to Muslim neighbours, friends, coworkers or fellow
students.
Our Catholic schools have many Muslim students enrolled in them.
They openly and sincerely question this teaching. Catholic
teachers usually find themselves at a loss as to how to explain
it. This leaves many Catholic teachers and students feeling
awkward and embarrassed, and some may even begin to doubt the
coherence and truth of this central article of faith. Needless
to say failure to articulate some reasonable explanation of it
only confirms Muslim fears and suspicions about Christian beliefs.

an essay I wrote a number of years back for our R.C.I.A.
It gives a reasoned explanation of the doctrine of the Most Holy
Trinity. It is fairly long. It could be used as (several)
homilies or as a handout to give to Catholic religion teachers
or students in your schools, or simply to inquiring parishioners.
It is crucial that we address this issue. Shying away from
it can only have detrimental consequences. |

June 19th Solemnity of
the Sacred Heart of Jesus
It is no coincidence that the Church's Year for Priests will begin
on June 19th, the Feast of the Sacred Heart, which is also
set aside as a world day of prayer for the sanctification of priests.

"I
promise you in the excessive mercy of my Heart that my all-powerful
love will grant to all those who receive Holy Communion on the
First Fridays in nine consecutive months the grace of final perseverance;
they shall not die in my disgrace, nor without receiving their
sacraments. My divine Heart shall be their safe refuge in this
last moment" (Jesus to St. Margaret Mary).
Sixteenth
century Calvinism and seventeenth century Jansenism preached a
distorted Christianity that substituted for God's love and sacrifice
of His Son for all men the fearful idea that a whole section of
humanity was inexorably damned.
The
Church always countered this view with the infinite love of our
Savior who died on the cross for all men. The institution of the
feast of the Sacred Heart was soon to contribute to the creation
among the faithful of a powerful current of devotion which since
then has grown steadily stronger. The first Office and Mass of
the Sacred Heart were composed by St. John Eudes, but the institution
of the feast was a result of the appearances of our Lord to St.
Margaret Mary Alacoque in 1675. The celebration of the feast was
extended to the general calendar of the Church by Pius IX in 1856….for

will keep you informed of the rich spiritual resources the Church
plans to place before us during this coming year, all flowing
from the Heart of Jesus. For those who need a review, a good primer
on the Sacred Heart devotion is Fr.
Richard Neilson's 1988 article The Sacred Heart and the Eucharist.

Listen to latest Men’s Breakfast
Talks
On
Saturday June 13th, Matt Farnand, CCO
Team Leader at Carleton University gave a great talk during
the Men’s Breakfast at the St. Augustine Parish. Matt provided
a moving testimony of his personal conversion during the 2002
World Youth Day in Toronto. He then dealt in detail
with the challenges faced by CCO in winning over today’s youth.
In
describing the green shoots of the Springtime of New Evangelization
which he is witnessing at Carleton, Matt has shown a remarkable
maturity and understanding of our faith especially for someone
so young (he is only 27 years old). This is truly a most hopeful
sign for the future.

On
Saturday June 6th, Jim Hughes, the National President of Campaign Life Coalition
(CLC), gave an inspiring and very informative Men’s Breakfast
talk at Annunciation of the Lord Parish. Jim provided a historical
perspective of the Pro-life movement in Canada,
as well as insights on how the various CLC initiatives
such as The Interim,
and the internationally acclaimed Life Site News
came into being.
What was particularly revealing was the personal sacrifice
that was required on his and his family's part in order for CLC
to succeed. Also of interest were Jim’s intriguing personal encounters
with Henry Morgentaler. Click Here for more info on Jim Hughes.

Debunking "Angels &
Demons" and the like
Angels
& Demons
is the latest initiative by Dan Brown & company to
present myths (basically lies) about the Catholic Church as historical
facts, and make millions in the process by publishing a book,
and then releasing a film. The same formula was applied three
years earlier with the Da Vinci Code.
Upon
hearing about Brown’s new book & movie, my initial repose
is to ignore and not waste any time investigating the book or
movie presuming a repeat of preposterous allegations as was the
case with the Da Vinci Code. However, recently a neighbour
explained how enthralled he is with Brown’s books and movies.
Within a few days, another acquaintance says she took her teen-aged
sons to see the movie. As a result, I could no longer sweep Angels
& Demons under the carpet so to speak, and felt compelled
to do some investigations and prepare an intelligent response.
The is not merely a harmless form of entertainment and escapism,
especially since Brown claims that his book is based on historical
truths. Hence, I came up with s a series of handy references on
the subject which could be accessed by clicking on Debunking the
Lies behind “Angels & Demons”. After all, as Christians
is it not a primordial responsibility to enlighten those who we
find floundering in the darkness of mistaken philosophies or blind
ideologies?
Robert
Ventresca,
Associate Professor of History at King's University College
at The University of Western Ontario brought up another pertinent
point as to the pervasiveness of these false myths regarding the
Church. Click on Angels
& Demons: The good, the bad and the ugly of religious history
A
related issue was brought up by John Fraser on “Why is it
OK to bash Catholics?” and Philip Jenkins in “Some prejudices
are more equal than others”. As Frazer observes “Out
of it all, an anti-Catholic industry has come to maturity in academia
and government, in newspapers and magazines, on television talk
shows and in movies…….. The sorts of insults regularly heaped
on the church by artists (the crucifixes pickled in jars of urine
on display at the Tate Modern Gallery, in London), entertainers
(celibacy jokes on Jay Leno) and commentators (Maureen Dowd is
the least offensive) would never be considered acceptable were
they aimed at any other group. Against the church, they hardly
cause a blip of concern.”
As
suggested by Fraser, one reason why the Church is always under
attack is because it is always pursuing the TRUTH. In fact, this
TRUTH is the Church’s armor. As clearly demonstrated in Dan Brown’s
books, the Church’s enemies commonly resort to mythical fabrications
and lies in order to attack her. We who are members of the Church
Militant are called to defend her “with at least as much
vigour as its enemies can muster up. Along with vigour is needed
more wisdom, more charity and more imagination.” |

Early Christians and Abortion

David
Brattston, a retired lawyer and judge, has written an article,
published by LifeSiteNews, in which he explores the question of
what early Christians had to say about abortion.
The
article comes in the wake of scandals involving Vice President
Joe Biden and Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi, who are both
Catholic but who have claimed in interviews with media that the
morality of abortion has been a question of debate throughout
Christian history.
Brattston
shows that, on the contrary, abortion was unanimously considered
sinful according to the earliest Christian thinkers. The author
explores the writings of Christian thinkers from the time of Christ
up until the first Church ecumenical council at Nicea in 325AD.
Brattston
concludes by saying that across early Christendom, abortion was
“forbidden by God and in the same category as any other murder.”

Catholic Search Engines
Google
is miserable and laborious to use in searching for good, orthodox
Catholic information and articles. Some solid web pages
are readily listed but many others take a lot of digging.
One wonders if this is just accidental or if there is a bias toward
Catholicism and Christianity in the manner the company orders
web pages?
Here are two Catholic search engines that make the task of finding
good Catholic articles on the Internet less onerous. They
are powered by Google to do custom searches. Unfortunately
they still sometimes include an unworthy site. They are
of no help with the more obscure web pages. Nonetheless
they are useful for the general Catholic. An irritating
feature of both is that they may bounce you back to the first
listing of pages when you open and close a web page.

"Men of the
Eucharist" prayer session in front of the Blessed Sacrament
To
all Men:
Last Friday we had a morning ”Men of the Eucharist"
prayer session in front of the Blessed Sacrament in the chapel
at St Margaret Mary's parish.
The topic discussed this morning was the necessity to accept daily
suffering in our lives and the grace from our Lord to help us
get through it. We discussed how St Faustina went through
these sufferings and how the Lord helped her. There was a good
discussion and feedback from the men about this topic as we were
able to share our personal experiences in some cases with work
and family situations. Many prayers of intercession and
thanks were offered to the Lord for all the wonderful things He
does for us daily in our lives.
